03 Remix & Copy

I found this TED Talks’ video talk about the remix culture which I can get some new idea from it.

Remix is copy, combine and transform.

Based on these elements, the process of remix can be explained by using semiotic theory which is copy the same paradigm then combine with new paradigm, then transform to a new syntagm.

Kirby Ferguson thinks that everything is remix and this is the better way to conceive creativity.

In my opinion, we can create better things when we are willing to learn from good idea and remake, recreate and reform a brand new idea. Sometimes remix method can make surprising results! In the video, Kirby took Steve Jobs as one of the examples to discuss about the originality issue. Steve Jobs mentioned that “Artist Picasso said good artist copy, great artist steal and we have to know I always be shameless about stealing great ideas.” These words reminds me a book that I read before which is “Steal like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. I could quote some line and share new thoughts from the book in my next post. Citation: TED, (2012). Kirby Ferguson: Embracing the remix.
